The next painting in the diver/vintage series. Inspiration has been drawn from the inspirational documentary, The Octopus Teacher. I painted this with the connection between us, our oceans and sea creatures in mind. A well spent 90 minutes, especially if you are an ocean lover! Part of my inspiration for the new painting was drawn from a concept in this documentary, which we as South Africans are proud of due to the awards it received.
My Octopus Teacher, the acclaimed Netflix documentary, became the first South African film to win an Academy Award for best documentary feature this week. The 90-minute film, which tells the interspecies relationship between filmmaker Craig Foster and an octopus living in the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean off False Bay, is an “introspective” and “emotive” engagement with the natural world, says Dr Ian-Malcolm Rijsdijk, director of the African Cinema Unit at the University of Cape Town. Since its Netflix debut in September last year, the film has won several international awards, including best documentary at the British Academy Film Awards (Bafta) and at the Producers Guild of America awards.

Heading off to the USA to an amazing client who commissioned the painting and has explored the wreck of the USS Monitor. The painting incorporates the wreck of the USS Monitor, an ironclad warship built for the Union Navy during the American Civil War. Various articles are available on different sites for those who are interested and a comprehensive background is available on Wikipedia. A very interesting read!
